A Survey Study of Psychological Characteristics and Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms in Veterans Who Performed Special Mission : Comparing Anti-North Secret Agents, Vietnam Veterans and Normal Control Subjects

Abstract
The aim of this study is to investigate post-traumatic stress and symptoms, psychological symptoms and defense mechanism style in veterans who performed special mission, and to confirm a difference in level of psychological problems among anti-north secret agents(n=9), Vietnam veterans(n=14) and normal control subjects(n=14). All participants responded to PTSD and complex PTSD symptoms scale, Brief Symptoms Inventory and Defense Style Questionnaire. Significant differences were found in PTSD and complex PTSD symptoms as well as psychological symptoms measured using BSI. All symptoms scored high in order of the anti-north secret agent group, the Vietnam veteran group, and the control group. Also, the anti-north agent group showed higher level of using immature and maladaptive defense cluster than other groups. Especially, the anti-north agent group used acting out defense more than other groups. The results of this study suggest that trauma-related symptoms, psychological symptoms and using of immature defense mechanism which were reported by anti-north agent have affected negative effect in their lives.
